How do you calculate a discount?
Work out the sale price and how much you save in seconds.
A discount is a percentage taken off the price. You can work out the amount and subtract it, or multiply the price by (1 − rate) directly.
The formula
Discount = Price × Discount% ÷ 100 Sale price = Price − Discount
25% off a 1,000 item: 1,000 × 0.25 = 250 off, so you pay 750.
Stacked discounts
Discounts multiply, they don't add. 20% off followed by 10% off is 28% in total: 1,000 × 0.80 × 0.90 = 720.
